<hi style=afpcap>The Army used a host of different aircraft types during World War Two for light liaison and observation duties supporting the ground forces. Amongst those selected for evaluation was the Interstate S-1B Cadet which was allocated the designation XL-6 Grasshopper in military service. The prototype was the last aircraft to be allocated a designation within the observation catagory, initially being XO-63, and later changing to the XL-6. 250 L-6s were ordered in 1943 with many serving in Europe.</hi>
